The news is extremely promising – the BMW Skytop could possibly go into production – 25 cars to be exact! Not a one-off once thought, the 8 Series Convertible, once a futuristic concept and with targa top, definitely has momentum – and enough support to move forward to a production version. Or at least that is the hope. While pricing is not yet revealed, a high cost is surely expected, even much more than the 8 Series priced at $100,500. With a concept boasting the most powerful V-8 ever used by BMW, the sky is definitely the limit!
A truly unique and exotic design in the tradition of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, the Skytop is presented with a combination of driving dynamics and elegance at what is the highest of levels. It is accentuated and characterized by athletic proportions and an organic body, and pays homage to some of its predecessors, including historic ancestors like the BMW Z8 or BMW 503.
The Skytop boasts a sleek exterior, marked by taut, muscular surfaces and featuring precise lines that draw the eye toward the rear. Other key design components include winglets that are seamlessly integrated into the door shoulders and serve to replace traditional door handles as well as light-alloy wheels with intricate lamellas which add to the vehicle’s distinctive look.
Other features that are nothing short of striking include a sweeping bonnet, the iconic BMW shark-nose design with illuminated kidney grille and a retracted rear section. Hints of the legendary BMW Z8 roadster are made clear, particularly in the pronounced spline that extends up from the bonnet and throughout the interior, as well as with the aluminum trim on the tailgate.
Cutting-edge technology marks the headlights and their intricate detail, with custom-developed LED units on milled aluminum offering the slimmest profile for automotive headlights. A clean, minimalist design consolidates all lighting functions into a single installation space. At rear, the lights are flat, with their defining shape serving to complement the overall aesthetic.
Brogue-style leather surfaces in tones of red and brown dot the inside, resulting in a feeling of luxury. Crystal applications embedded in the cockpit are extremely sophisticated and speak to the automaker’s commitment to artisanal and fine craftsmanship.
Under hood is the most powerful V8 engine, giving drivers the thrill of a lifetime each and every time they get behind the wheel.
Visually, the Skytop shines with the vehicle’s color scheme transitioning smoothly from interior to exterior with a reddish-brown roof to a muted silver and chrome shadow effect of the exterior paintwork. An elaborate color gradient was completed at the hand of experienced master painter at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing.
A testament to BMW’s commitment to innovation and design excellence, as well as a glimpse into the future of luxury automotive craftsmanship, the Skytop is poised to possibly reach production and get the green light within the year. The news is exciting for BMW’s ardent fans, and the sky is definitely the limit! Stay on the lookout!
