What we know!
There are key criteria when considering the Performance Car of the Year, the list of which is notable. That includes: Advancement in Design, Engineering Excellence, Performance of Intended Function, Value, Efficiency and Driver Confidence and Engagement. A full team of judges weigh in on each of these points, with the M2 not only exceeding all standards, but surpassing its benchmarks as well.
This classic-leaning vehicle, which perfectly and successfully pays homage to the legendary 2002 contemporary format, starts its greatness with its platform. Moving to BMW’s modular CLAR architecture for the car’s G87 iteration, the M2 team leaned heavily on the past work for the larger M3 and M4, taking advantage of the added structural enhancements in the existing M4. Engineers cleaved 4.3 inches from its wheelbase while leaving the track width intact. What resulted is a slightly larger car than its predecessor but nearly a foot stubbier than its bigger sibling. This gives the M2 better straight-line stability and ride comfort, as well as ample interior space, all while still retaining the point-and-squirt feel that was so loved in the previous M2 and the 1M prior.
In tuning the chassis, the M2 borrowed the M3 and M4’s variable ratio electric power steering system and a version of their electronically adapting suspension, consisting of slighter firmer front springs and a softer rear suspension tuned. This was all thanks to dampers borrowed from the 3 Series Touring station wagon.
In the area of power, the hardware of the M2 includes an engine from the M3 and M4. The M2 is powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbo I-6, which makes 453 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. That engine drives an active rear differential through an eight-speed automatic or six-speed manual. Quicker than both the old M2 CS and the current M4, the new M2 jumps from 0-60 mph in just 3.5 seconds.
Infinitely customizable, the M2 boasts three stability control modes and three transmission firmness options for the automatic, as well as adjustable steering, suspension, powertrain response and more.
Software engineering also is relayed through the M2’s brakes, which speak to its all-out performance.
Performance personified!
Driver confidence and engagement is a given in this performance-packed vehicle, with the M2 light in its moves, and the steering, throttle, suspension and brakes responding to inputs with eagerness. Whether on track or on the road, the M2 is all-out enjoyable to drive, with its torque-rich, quick-revving twin-turbo inline-six buttery smooth. Like all great drivers’ cars, this M2 allows enthusiasts to surpass all limits.
BMW’s software-controlled rear diff is also amazing. It is incorporated into a signal path with the engine management system, therefore responding faster and more transparently than it would if it used a more conventional closed-loop system. Due to this, the real world just got that much more enjoyable!
A car that performs like a scaled-down M3 but with a plethora of other benefits for today’s consumer? You bet! As playfully unhinged on the track as it is on the street, the M2 is a surprisingly practical and true coupe. It also boasts a richly appointed and comfortable cabin that is rooted in modern touches, including the infotainment suite and premium audio system within. There are also heated leather seats in what is truly a performance-oriented cabin, a sunroof and much more, with the M2 carrying a starting price tag of $64,195.
Everything enthusiasts want – and so much more! This smart, well-balanced and engaging vehicle may just possibly be the best BMW M car developed in the 21st century. It’s also a clear Performance Vehicle of the Year winner for 2024, with this vehicle standing out above all the rest. Crazy, unhinged, wild – its sense of passion is remarkable.
