2025 BMW M5
August 14 2024

Power packed!

The new M5 for 2025 and entering its seventh generation will have under hood a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine, the same S68B44TO engine found in any current BMW model that offers a V-8. For the new M5, it boasts 577 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque, with the engine revving with a redline at 7,200 rpm. The remainder of this powerhouse’s power comes from its M Hybrid system, with this synchronous electric motor mounted inside the vehicle’s eight-speed transmission. That motor presents 192 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque, with the torque having the ability to be boosted up to 332 lb-ft at the transmission input via a “pre-gearing stage” process, patented by BMW and the same setup present in the existing XM performance SUV.

The electric motor is fed by a 14.8-kWh battery pack, managed by BMW’s “Combined Charging Unit.” This unit acts as a transformer to supply power to the 12-volt system which also has a predictive heat management that uses such factors in calculating the optimal temperature for the battery pack, the outside ambient temp, predicted charging power and remaining distance to destination, among others.

The battery is good for about 25 miles of all-electric range, which allows drivers enough distance to get in and out of a neighborhood quietly, for example. Combined with the V-8, the electric boost pushes the total system output to 717 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque, which is enough to propel the M5 sedan from 0-60 mph in just 3.4 seconds. Power is sent to all four wheels through the M’s xDrive all-wheel drive and managed across the rear axle by the Active M Differential.

Although it adds power, the hybrid system does also add weight, with BMW estimating that the new M5 comes in at 5,400 pounds, roughly 1,100 pounds heavier than the last standard M5 weighed back in 2019 and 1,300 pounds heavier than the 2022 M5.

It’s got the look!

Showcasing a wide range of M-specific design elements, the all-new M5 is a looker! A new massive air dam up front is an eye-catcher without a doubt, slanting forward and looking good in context with the rest of the vehicle. Not only for show, this design improves air flow and cooling, essential for maintaining optimal performance under intense driving conditions. There are adaptive LED headlights with cornering functionality and the signature kidney grille, with the new M5 also featuring wheel arches larger than before, making the new model three inches wider at the front wheels and 1.9 inches wider at the rear of the previous model. The M5 sits atop 20-inch wheels and a pair of 21-inchers are nestled at back.

A blacked-out rear end is nearly one-third diffuser, which gives way to signature M quad four-inch exhaust tips. Taillights are thin and not emphasized. An optional carbon fiber decklid spoiler adds an extra bit of black contrast. The rear apron is sculpted to optimize airflow, with the integrated diffuser aiding in aerodynamics while giving the car a sporty overall look.

In the cabin, luxury and refinement is realized through a decked-out interior bursting with tech and comfort, topped only by two-toned leather upholstery and twin reclining bucket seats up front. A new three-spoke leather wrapped flat bottom steering wheel with stitching in M colors and a red center marker at the 12 o’clock position is home to a wide range of tactile buttons, including programmable M mode buttons. An iDrive controller returns on the center console to allow the driver ease in navigating through the OS 8.5.

The curved display is also another highlight within, with this fully digital screen grouping consisting of a 12.3-inch information display and a 14.9-inch control display, providing a modern interface for all of the vehicle functions. AirConsole service with a library of casual games makes things that much more enjoyable while either waiting at a charger or a gas station. If games are not to your liking, take advantage of streaming YouTube or other on-demand video services while parked.

Seats can be customized with one of four shades of Extended Merino Leather: Black, Silverstone/Black bi-color; Red/Black bi-color; and Kyalami Orange/Black bi-color. To add even more exclusivity, BMW introduces for 2025 the BMW Individual Full Merino Metallic leather trim which is available in a sharp-looking Black/Dark Violet bi-color and a lovely Taupe Grey/Deep Lagoon Pearl Effect bi-color.

Ambient lighting throughout enhances the luxury found within, and includes lighting for the smartphone tray, center armrest and handle recess in the door panel trim, along with a welcome animation featuring light signals in BMW M tricolor. A BMW Interaction Bar, which is integrated into the instrument panel with a beautiful crystalline glass appearance, spans into the front door panel trim and includes control surfaces for ventilation settings, rear window heating and hazard warning lights.

Rounding out the interior is a Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system presented as standard and with 18 speakers and 655 watts.
