Here’s more..

What’s new?

The four-cylinder 4-series Gran Coupe sees the addition of a 48-volt hybrid system for the very first time, while a revised setup gives the six-cylinder M440i an extra 4 hp. Also new are redesigned headlights and taillights, a kidney grille and a slightly modified cabin.

In specific with the headlights and taillights, the low and high beams are now placed in a single LED module, and, as a special touch, these new headlights perform an animation once the key is within 10 feet of the car, serving as that perfect welcome to today’s drivers. Most obvious are the headlights, which no longer include the long-running BMW “Angel Eye” design.

At rear, both models equipped with the M Sport package feature a rear diffuser that is finished in gloss black.

Changes under the hood are not huge, but noteworthy nonetheless. For the Gran Coupe models, they receive a revised 48-volt hybrid system, adding the technology to the base turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder for the very first time. Despite this addition of a hybrid, however, the turbo four in the 430i model continues with an identical 255 horsepower. This engine now runs the Miller cycle for increased efficiency.

A more powerful M440i, thanks to the 48-volt setup, gets an additional 11 horsepower to the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, bringing the updated system to a combined output of 386 horsepower, for a 4-hp improvement overall. We consider that a very nice bump! And as previously, both engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Changes to the interior include the update of BMW’s iDrive 8.5 software, which moves controls for the climate control system, heated seats and heated steering wheel into the system’s touchscreen. There is also improved EV route planning with charging stops, and a tweaked HVAC vent design. Other updated cabin materials found within the i4 and the 4-series Gran Coupe include new brushed-aluminum trim and two new open-pore wood options.

There are also two new steering wheel options, including a two-spoke for standard models and a flat-bottom three-spoke version for the M Sport cars.

The i4 in particular gets the benefit of a unique update – a new plug-and-charge system that can store up to five contracts, allowing drivers to pay for multiple public charging networks directly from their vehicle.
