2025 BMW M5 review

All the ins and outs!

Complete with extra firepower and an upgraded chassis, this vehicle is rooted in performance potential. New with its availability as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and with a V-8 engine and electric motor, the numbers indeed tell the story. Motorists enjoy a whopping 717 horsepower with a top speed of up to 190 mph. This vehicle also offers an estimated electric driving range of 25 miles on a full charge.

Rooted in a sports sedan mission due to plethora of performance-enhancing features, including adaptive dampers and available carbon-ceramic brakes, the M5 offers a wide range of drive modes that take this four-door from mild to wild at the simple press of a button.

Redesigned for 2025, the M5 is based on the latest 5-Series and will bring forth a wagon variant named the M5 Touring, planned for the U.S. market.

Offered in a single trim level but also with several big-ticket options and packages, the M5 will have something for everyone. There are carbon-ceramic brakes, for example, for an extra $8,500, as well as an M Drive Professional package for $900 with additional drive modes. An M Driver's package that will increase the top speed from 155 to 190 mph is for the asking for an extra $2,500, while an Executive package for $1,850 adds numerous desirable equipment like ventilated front seats, rear–set sunshades, a park-assist system and heated rear seats.

In the area of power, the M5 for 2025’s new plug-in hybrid powertrain combines a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 engine with an electric motor and an eight-speed transmission. Within its drive mode is a setting for the all-wheel-drive system that enables a rear-wheel-drive-biased drift mode. Adaptive dampers, rear-wheel steering and huge brakes are standard, with the M5 all things capable on the open road.

Drivers of the M5 reach 60 mph from 0 in just 3.4 seconds, with that number even less in expert testing. The automaker estimates that the M5’s 14.8-kWh battery pack will provide around 25 miles on electric power alone when fully charged, with the vehicle's hybrid powertrain now resulting in higher mpg ratings than before.

Within the cabin, occupants relish in notable tweaks to the 5-Series sedan design, including an M-specific flat-bottom steering wheel with customizable M buttons and a red center hash mark as well as larger shift paddles. There are also sportier seats and lighting elements and screen animations. Options of various leather, wood and aluminum trim options are available, with the cabin also featuring the same five-seat layout, iDrive control knob and large display screens typical of the series. Presented as standard are a panoramic sunroof and a Bowers & Wilkins audio system.

Drivers enjoy the plethora of configurable information presented via a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and 14.9-inch central infotainment touchscreen. The infotainment system runs BMW’s iDrive 8.5 software, featuring the ever-popular and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as well as other connectivity features including video streaming and gaming.

A slew of driver-assistance features are standard, including automated emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring. Advanced features, including BMW’s hands-free driving mode, are optional and offered as part of the Driving Assistant Professional package. More info on the M5’s crash test results can be found on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety websites.

The new M5 is also equipped with standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection; standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist and available adaptive cruise control with hands-free driving mode.

With steering that is perfectly and fantastically received, resulting in superb handling, and with a new 717 hp plug-in hybrid, there is much to consider – and celebrate – with the M5 for 2025. Performance personfied, and all that motorists love from the 5 Series, the M5 is your next best choice. Take a test drive, and reserve yours today!
