What we know!
The facts themselves are exciting! The first M5 Touring, ever offered in the U.S., has an M Hybrid drive system that produces 717 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque. Projected to be fully electric, this sedan has a base MSRP of $121,500, plus $1,175 destination and handling.
In the area of performance, it is expected to jump from 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds and boasts up to 57.6 cubic feet of luggage space.
This high-performance model offers a new level of utility, offering all-out comfort and a race-bred feel, all hallmarks of an M5. Thanks to the plug-in hybrid powertrain, the M5 Touring enables today’s motorists to experience almost silent and locally emission-free driving, with a preliminary estimated range of up to 25 miles on a full charge.
With a unique exterior design, including prominently flared wheel arches and side skirts, as well as the M-specific front and rear aprons and large air intake and newly designed M kidney grille, this all-new model also is presented with unique interior configurations and appointments. Add to that ample cargo space and flexible load-carrying capacity for leisure activities and trips away, and this is truly your next best choice!
In other eye-catching design cues, the M5 badge is displayed on the horizontal double bar of the newly designed grille, while the center houses the sensors for the driver assistance systems. The lower section holds two small air intakes that ensure optimum temperature control, while the BMW Iconic Glow contour lighting on the grille is also available as part of the luxurious Executive Package, or as a standalone option.
Below the grille a central lower air intake is found, and a black high-gloss aperture in the front apron ensures a generous supply of cooling air. Featuring an overall wide stance, the M5 Touring also is presented with pronounced wheel arches and various sculptural surfaces. The all-new model is offered with the standard M Shadowline Lights with Full LED headlights, bringing a clean, modern look to the typical four-eyed face with black trim on the inside of their
housing. There is also a model specific roof spoiler and expressive rear end. Familiar M quad exhaust tailpipes in Black Chrome are also stylishly integrated into the left and right of the rear apron. The sportiness of this model is made perfectly clear in M double spoke alloy wheels, Style 951M, and presented in a bi-color finish and in staggered dimensions.
Drivers have the choice of body colors that are truly expressive, in exclusive M variants like Isle of Man Green metallic and Marina Bay Blue metallic, as well as a wide array of BMW Individual special order paint finishes.
In the area of power, the first M5 Touring is presented with an electrified drive system. The M Hybrid powertrain, brings a high-revving V8 engine with MTwinPower Turbo technology and an electric motor together, both integrated into the transmission. The result is truly a powerful and precise driving experience rooted in enhanced efficiency and also resulting in all-electric driving.
A product of fifth-gen BMW eDrive technology, the electric motor integrated into the 8-speed M Steptronic transmission gives the M5 Touring extremely sharp and precise power delivery. Also, the limited top speed of 155 mph is raised to 190 mph when the optional M Driver’s Package is specified. Fully electric driving is enabled for up to 87 mph, with the 14.8 kWh HV battery, installed in the vehicle’s underbody in an effort to save space, offering an estimated maximum electric range of up to 25 miles on a full charge, perfect for a casual day trip.
Under hood, the 4.4-liter V8 is combined with the high-revving character typical of BMW M engines and equipped with the latest M TwinPower Turbo technology. The electric motor gives off instantaneous power delivery as well as high torque.
Thanks to an integrated cooling system, the M5 Touring has been adapted to the everyday demands of daily use and track driving. The 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic channels the power generated by the combustion engine as well as drive torque from the integrated electric motor as required to enhance either efficiency, comfort or performance. If that’s not enough, up to five operating modes allow drivers to choose their optimum set up at all times. There is the setting of HYBRID, giving the driver access to the full system output of the combustion engine and electric motor in tandem; the ELECTRIC, for locally emission-free driving; as well as eCONTROL, allowing the charge of the high-voltage battery to be maintained at a constant level during a journey or increased by means of energy recuperation or by deliberately raising the combustion engine’s load points.
Those who opt for the M Drive Professional can also take advantage of DYNAMIC and DYNAMIC PLUS modes, which ensure the combustion engine and electric motor are both active and that the cooling system is conditioned for track driving.
Thanks to the overall dual nature of this vehicle, an enthralling driving experience is a given, both for everyday use and those longer journeys. Add to that M Servatronic steering and Integral Active Steering as standard, along with adaptive M suspension and electronically controlled dampers, and literally all driving situations are covered.
An integrated braking system with individually selectable settings are fitted as standard, and M Carbon ceramic brakes are optional.
The M5 Touring also features a wide range of driver assistance systems, with highly configurable functionality. Improvements in this area have been made with standard-fitted systems including Forward Collision Mitigation; Lane Keeping Assistant and Speed Limit Info; as well as Driving Assistant including Active Blind Spot Detection and Speed Limit Assistant. The Parking Assistant is now standard, and incorporates such key elements as Backup Assistant, Active Park Distance Control and Lateral Parking Assistant.
Within the M5 is a cockpit that is designed to deliver a focused performance experience, with the M-specific operating concept for adapting the vehicle set up to personal preferences an added enhancement. The cabin also boasts high-quality materials, and luxurious equipment features. There is an M leather steering wheel with gearshift paddles and M buttons. The wheel, sporting a three-spoke design, comes with a red center marker in the 12 o’ clock position, a flat-bottomed rim and stitching in BMW M tricolor.
For those opting for a longer journey, buyers can outfit the standard M Multifunction Seats in one of four shades of Extended Merino Leather including black, silverstone/black bi-color; red/black bi-color and Kyalami orange/black bi-color. Beginning in the spring of 2025, buyers will be able to specify BMW Individual Full Merino Leather trim in black/dark violet bi-color and Taupe grey/deep lagoon bi-color.
Model-specific interior lighting and a BMW Interaction Bar and standard ambient lighting is enjoyed by all within the cabin, offering an atmosphere that is truly unique and tranquil. There is also extensive standard equipment within, including the Sky Lounge Panoramic Roof, which serves to flood the inside with light.
In the area of technology, the BMW Curved Display in the cockpit expertly provides the ideal platform from which to configure the drive settings in the Touring from the M Setup menu quickly and intuitively by touch on the control display. All M5 Touring models come with a 14.9 inch infotainment screen. The new display and control is based on BMW Operating System 8.5, and offers M-specific displays for all other vehicle functions such as navigation, communications and climate control. There is also video streaming and AirConsole games on the control display, as well as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A 12.3-inch digital gauge display is also standard, as is a Bowers & Wilkins stereo system.
A plethora of safety features is also offered here, with automated emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring as standard, as well as more advanced features, including BMW’s hands-free driving mode, as optional.
